Before you watch
This is a warm, unhurried testimony from a 70-year-old missionary who came to faith at 17 in an abandoned gas station. It contains mild spiritual warfare content from his time in Thailand, including a child's near-death illness, but is told with joy and no graphic detail. What makes it worth watching is the thread of God's sovereign preparation running through every detour — construction work, a father's death, a hurricane — all of it used.
What this story teaches
People often assume God only works through dramatic crises, but Bob's story shows God quietly working through grandmothers, football teams, and a cheerleader's invitation — ordinary people and moments that accumulate into a life-changing encounter.
How God moved
God had his eye on a poor, rough-edged boy from Alabama before that boy had any idea God existed — and he never stopped working. He used a grandmother's prayers, a cheerleader's invitation, a classmate's boldness, and even a father's death to bring one person into a lifetime of fruitfulness. Nothing was wasted, not even the construction work.
What Jesus showed him
Bob carried a vague but persistent sense of guilt and moral accountability from childhood — knowing he had violated a God he did not yet know — and the Holy Spirit used the Ten Commandments at age eight to name that wound precisely: he was guilty, and he needed a way to be guilt-free.
He's more than just the breath that I breathe. He is my reason for living. He saved me from who knows what — a drug overdose or a car wreck. He permeates us.
Go Deeper
Give your heart to Jesus as quick as you can. It is the best. It is absolutely the best life that anyone could live is to live with Jesus indwelling you, teaching you, cleaning you up, working on your personality, working on your heart, working on your life. Don't pass up an opportunity to allow Jesus to take control of your life and for you to surrender everything to him.

What you can take from this
This week, think of one person in your life who seems far from God — and pray for them specifically by name, the way Bob's grandmothers prayed for him. Sustained, specific prayer is often the invisible thread behind someone's conversion.
The house in Thailand had been dedicated to territorial spirits with spirit strings running around the entire perimeter. Bob's family experienced sustained illness — malaria for Bob, near-death illness for his infant son — and general spiritual attack while living there.
By age nine or ten, Bob had already been introduced to alcohol, pornography, and foul language through the construction-site environment — a trajectory that, without intervention, would have led to a drug overdose or car wreck by his own assessment.
After Bob's conversion, his father was distraught — he had lost the drinking buddy and business heir he planned for. He did not speak to Bob for six weeks after Bob prayed over him during a medical emergency, creating sustained relational tension designed to discourage the new believer.
Whatever they're talking about — their relationship with the Lord — I don't have that. How can I get it? Can I get it now?
I bought my first Bible that night — a large-print New Testament and Psalms. The Lord began from that very night to teach me from his word.
I'm free. There's some things I'm going to have to take care of. I got some stuff I need to throw away out of my truck.
I picked my dad. I took him in my arms and I laid my hands on his chest and prayed for my own father. I said, 'Lord, he doesn't know you. I'm not ready for him to face eternity.'
Yes, we're willing to go wherever you send us, Lord, in the middle of a war zone. We're willing.
The Lord instructed me to get up and start pulling on those strings. I started pulling and the string started coming out from between where the wall meets the roof... it kept going all the way around the edge of the entire house.
Jeremiah 1:5
The anchor verse of Bob's testimony — God's foreknowledge and calling before birth, which Bob saw as God's plan for a poor Alabama boy.
Romans 3:23
One of five verses the young evangelist used to lead Bob to Christ — 'All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.'
Ephesians 2:8–9
Salvation as the gift of God, not of works — the verse that made it clear to Bob this was what he needed.
1 Corinthians 10:13
God provides a way out of temptation — gave Bob assurance he could overcome habits and temptations of his youth.
Psalms 119:105
Implicit in Bob's repeated description of the Word as a billboard and road sign guiding his life.
Mark 5:9–10
Bob cited Legion's territorial plea — 'don't cast us out of this region' — to explain the demonic oppression he encountered in Thailand.
Galatians 4:4
'In the fullness of time Jesus came' — Bob applied this principle to God's perfect timing in bringing the gospel to Thailand.
Luke 2:29–30
Bob compared himself to Simeon — having seen the Lord's work, he is at peace and ready to go to heaven.
Matthew 28:19–20
The Great Commission — the explicit scriptural mandate Bob and his wife surrendered to when called to Southeast Asia.
Luke 23:42–43
Bob compared his father's deathbed prayer for forgiveness to the thief on the cross — a last-moment salvation.
Bob explicitly anchors his entire testimony to this verse — God's foreknowledge and calling of an unlikely poor boy from Alabama.
Bob explicitly compares himself to Simeon — having seen God's glory in his lifetime, he is at peace and ready to depart.
Bob explicitly names this parallel for his father's last-moment prayer for forgiveness before dying of a heart attack.
Bob directly cited the Legion account to explain the territorial demonic oppression his family encountered in Thailand.
Jesus told Bob to look at how he trained the Twelve as the model for training evangelistic teams in the Philippines.
Earnie's Christian Walk
Rough-edged construction-site kid with a vague moral conscience but no faith → lifelong missionary and minister who has seen 7,000 churches planted across Southeast Asia.
Led multiple friends to Christ during his senior year of high school; married and raised a family; built a decades-long missionary career; witnessed his unsaved father praying for forgiveness and thanking God for him before dying; saw 7,000 churches planted in Thailand in seven years.
I came home and I was transformed. And Jesus had gotten a hold of my life.
He saved me from who knows what. Had I followed my human inclinations and followed the voices around me, my life would have been a mess or I'd have been long dead from a drug overdose or a car wreck.
Contracted malaria in Thailand; youngest son stopped breathing and turned purple from illness in a house dedicated to territorial spirits; had to leave the mission field; father died unexpectedly, forcing Bob to take over the family construction business for years before returning to ministry.
It's the gift of God. It's not anything we can do. It is the gift of God.
Missionary to Southeast Asia since 1970 — trained Jesus Film evangelism teams, planted thousands of churches across Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and the Philippines; oversaw 3,000 church volunteers teaching Bible-based values in over 1,000 Philippine public schools.
Prayer
The power of Prayer — praying grandmother stood in the gap for Earnie.
Both sets of grandparents prayed for Bob consistently. His grandmother took him to church and vacation Bible school whenever she could, and took him along to any youth or children's event available — she was the most influential human presence in his early spiritual formation. A cheerleader classmate later invited him to the youth meeting where he was converted, and a young classmate-turned-evangelist led him through five Bible verses and prayed with him to receive Christ.
Earnie closes their testimony with a prayer for you.
Whatever you carry right now, you can bring it to Him. You don’t need the right words.
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 10:13
If you don’t know how → Just ask him
Pray for young people who grew up in unstable homes but have a nagging sense that something bigger exists — that God would send a grandmother, a friend, or a single invitation to bring them to the moment of surrender.
Is today your day?
Absolutely, He will.
You don't have to figure everything out right now.
You don't need to have all the answers.
If something stirred in your heart while you were watching or reading — that's not nothing.
That is the Holy Spirit gently knocking on the door of your heart.
Stay right here. There's no rush. The Spirit doesn't pressure or hurry.
Watch another video. Read a little more. Take your time.
When you're ready — even if “ready” just means a little curious — Jesus is ready to meet you.
You don't have to clean up your life first.
You don't have to pass any test.
You only need to say a simple “yes” to Him.
He will take care of the rest.
“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
