The church had taught me things were criteria for salvation — I was baptized, I confessed Christ as my savior, I was born again, I go to church and I give tithes — and they laughed. Those little tricks the church had taught me were useless at that point. I wasn't saved and the church had taught me I was.

They had been with me my entire life and had been trying to kill me since birth. They said they had me because I had sinned and had not dealt with my sins — and then they rattled off this enormous list of sins I had never properly dealt with, things the church had taught me were inconsequential.

The demons came back a second time — not laughing, not communicating — just charging right at me as if going to make another attempt to capture me, while Jesus stood right there and did not intervene. They were not at all afraid of attacking me with Jesus right there.

I had done everything out of duty — pragma. I was doing it to get out of hell, to get into heaven, to get a reward. I didn't love God, I didn't love my fellow man. I was like the people Jesus refers to in Matthew 7:23 — they believed in Jesus but were using his name and authority to build their own kingdom.

Matthew 7:23

Carl identified himself with those who did works in Jesus' name but whom Jesus said 'I never knew you' — the intimate relational knowledge was absent.

Carl was a religious performer with no real relationship with Christ; a direct encounter with Jesus transformed his understanding of what genuine faith requires.
